Introduction to Turkey
GEOGRAPHY Turkey is a vast and diverse country located in the Eastern Mediterranean. Both the country and its capital city, Istanbul is in the unique position of lying on two continents, Europe and Asia. The European part of Turkey is called Thrace, while the Asian part is Anatolia or Asia Minor. The stunning coastline is more than 8,333 km long and is surrounded by sea on three sides, by the Black Sea in the north, the Mediterranean in the south and the Aegean Sea in the west. In the northwest there is also an important internal sea, the Sea of Marmara, between the straits of the Dardanelles and the Bosphorus. The total area is 814,578 sq km, roughly the size of Texas in the USA, of which 790,200 sq km are in Asia and 24,378 in Europe. CLIMATE Reliably warm and sunny, temperatures in Turkey range from 21ºC in spring to a scorching 40 ºC+ at the height of summer, with between eight and twelve hours of sunshine daily from April to October.
