Introduction to Caribbean
All together, the Caribbean islands cover about 90,000 square miles, almost half are hilly or mountainous and the other half are flat. Most of the islands have wonderful scenery combining the best of both worlds, surrounded by sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters of the ocean.
Each island has its own history, culture and traditions. They are also quite diverse scenically. Some are volcanic in origin and are very lush and tropical, whilst others are coral formations relying on their pristine white sands to attract visitors. Some are little more than undeveloped islets with a few coconut palms, some are cosmopolitan countries in their own right, boasting fashionable shops and exciting nightlife. Several proudly retain their French or Spanish traditions, whilst others revel in a West Indian lifestyle only slightly influenced by their English heritage.
With year-round good weather (with the minor exception of hurricane season in the late summer and early fall), promotional air fares from Europe and North America and hundreds of islands to explore, the Caribbean offers something special to suit most tastes.
